Bob's wife Natalie was a "weekend" quilter and was always taking classes. After constantly
helping his wife Natalie with advice on color, placement, and value decisions for her quilts, Bob
decided that he might as well take up quilting. In the beginning he did the traditional quilts.
Bob took a class in Houston at the International Quilt Festival in 1998 from Hollis Chatelaine
that gave him the knowledge to use dyes as paint and cotton as canvas. He started by "painting"
some of his old figure drawings that he did in the 70s and objects from nature. He has added
abstract pieces that also use discharge and re-dying. He was so motivated to quilt that Natalie
gave him a year off from work to become an artist. He could not wait to get up in the mornings
and start working. These quilts are art pieces and one of a kind. Bob spends from 20 to 200
hours on each piece and they range in size from 4" x 4" to 60" x 70." Bob received his MA from
Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Bob added workshops to his summer activities and in
2006 he retired from public school teaching to become a full time "starving artist."
