Plein Air Weekend

Working plein air, or on-site, from the landscape is an immersion into the environment with all of our senses. This two-day workshop will emphasize your connection with your subject so that the process is enjoyable and the final product is a genuine response to the scene.

Students will be drawing and painting at sites in and around Auburn. At each location you will choose your own subject from the landscape, architecture, and people present. We will explore conceptual ideas in our compositions.  Students will learn methods for creating spatial illusion and the importance of value and how it can be translated into color and the interaction of colors.  We’ll look at the ways in which lines and shapes can establish gesture and texture. Mary Padgett will work one-on-one with each person establishing a supportive working environment while demonstrating and offering design and technical information. At the end of each day the group will come together to assess the work done and share ideas about concept and craft.
Emphasis will be placed on the plein air process and not a particular medium. Students may choose to work with whichever media they'd like (pastel, watercolor, gouache, oil or acrylic paint, charcoal, pen & ink, etc).
It is not necessary to have an easel. Portable easels can be provided if desired. Students should bring a portable stool/chair.
Open to all levels and all plein air media, rain or shine.
