Schweinfurth Art Center Adult Classes Registration Policies

Pre-registration is required for classes unless otherwise stated. Payment is due at the time of registration. No refunds will be given for cancellations within one week of class start date.

Supply lists will be provided for certain classes. Students should purchase and bring the supplies to the first day of class unless otherwise indicated. Supply lists will be posted on the Art Center website as soon as possible, or emailed to registered students.

Special Accommodation for Schweinfurth Art Center Classes & Workshops

Participants that require special accommodation are encouraged to request accommodation at the time of registration. At least 2 weeks notice is requested.

All classes take place at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, located at 205 Genesee St., Auburn, NY 13021.

Magic Mosaics



Have a favorite landscape, portrait or design that deserves a reinterpretation? Join us this spring for Magic Mosaics where we will explore patterns, rhythms, shapes and color using small tile pieces to create mosaics. In this 6-week class you will experiment with arranging tiles in various shapes and colors in interesting ways to reimagine your favorite ideas. 

Students are welcome to bring in special tiles or items they have collected. Basic materials and tools will be provided as part of class fee.

The image on the left is a mosaic that Janie is working on. Each tile is carved or in relief, and each piece will be glazed and fired before reassembling.

Market Basket Workshop



Create your own market basket perfect for spring flowers and summer vegetables in this one-day weaving workshop with Liz Carnes. 

Use rattan materials to create a basket measuring approximately 11"W x 15"L x 6.5"H, plus handle. Personalize your basket with a poplar veneer panel with your own design.  Appropriate for those new to basket weaving.

All materials included in class fee.

When: Saturday, May 19, 9am-4pm with an hour break for lunch

Beginner Oil Painting Series



Learn the basics of oil painting in this 4-week class series with Hetty Easter. Learn how to render value and form with a limited palette.  Students will paint in the French style of grisaille,  a method of painting in monochrome and a terrific way to experiment with oil painting. Explore this medium working from simple still life subjects.

When: Tuesdays, 1:30-3:30pm, May 22-June 12, 2018
Who: Ages 16 and up

Clay Open Studio



Inspired to work on your own project? For artists and students with pottery experience interested in working independently without instruction, our Clay Studio is available to use on a monthly and drop-in basis. Open to ages 15 and up. A short orientation is required prior to using the studio unless you have taken a clay class at the Art Center.
 
Open Studio Hours
Tuesdays: 9:30am-4pm
Wednesdays: 9:30am-3pm
Thursdays: 9:30am-8pm
Fridays:  9:30am-4pm 
Saturdays:  12:30pm-4pm
Note the the Clay Studio will be closed during Spring Art Camp, April 23-27, in the morning. The Clay Studio will also be closed on Saturday, June 23 during exhibit installation.
 
Fees
Use of Clay Studio is free for students enrolled in an ongoing class in the Clay Studio
Monthly fee:  $30 for members / $35 for non-members
Drop-in fee:  $5 for members / $7 for non-members
 
Monthly fees include use of glazes, community tools and tables in Clay Studio and room outside studio. Firing fees are additional. Firing fees are “$1/mug size” for a bisque firing and “$1/mug size” for glaze firing. $1 extra per 6 extra inches in height.  Drop-in students are charged for firing on a per piece basis ("$1/mug size" fees apply). 
 
Clay is available for purchase in a 50lb box or 25lb bag. Note that clay used in the Clay Studio must be purchased through the Art Center. This allows us to reclaim clay and to minimize problems in kiln firings.  Exceptions possible if approved by a Clay Studio teacher.

Sewing Open Studio

Have sewing experience and are inspired to work on your own project? The Barbara Feinstein Sewing Studio is available to use on drop-in basis. Enjoy the large open studio with a loft-like setting. Plenty of table space and design boards.

Open to ages 15 and up. A short orientation is required prior to using the studio unless you have taken a sewing class at the Art Center. Use of machines available only to those who have taken a sewing class, or by approval.

Thursdays: 1-5pm
Saturdays:  12:30-4pm
 
Fee:  $5/drop-in fee for non-members.   $3/drop-in fee for members.

MakeRoom for Knitting & Crocheting



Come to the Schweinfurth and knit with friends!  Join our drop-in group which meet in our upstairs Barbara Feinstein Sewing Studio on Tuesdays, from 11am-2pm. 

When: Tuesdays, 11am-2pm, ongoing unless noted otherwise
Who: Ages 15 and up
Cost: Free for members / $2 for non-members

Clay Studio: Pottery Wheel



This 6-week series is a terrific introduction to the exciting pottery wheel, clay and glazes. All registered students have free access to our clay studio to work on projects and continue to practice skills during the class period. Class size limited to 8 students. Appropriate for students who are new to the wheel, those who are looking to brush up on their skills and those with limited experience. With more than 30 years teaching experience, John is able to adapt the class sessions to the interests and skill levels of participating students.
 
Class fee includes 25 lb. of clay, use of community tools and glazes. Firing fees are additional.
