Set Yourself Free — Five Jackets Without Patterns

3 days - All Levels

Do you have some wonderful fabrics you would like to make into jackets? Are you frustrated by poor fit? Are you a beginning fashion sewer and don’t know what’s required to make a successful jacket? Are you an experienced sewer who is short on time and long on fabric? Do you have leftover squares or pieces from a quilting project you would like to use up? Five different patterns will be described in class.Within a few minutes you can take your measurements and begin constructing a beautiful jacket… or possibly two depending on your choices. We will also explore a number of interesting techniques which will give your jacket a professional look for years of wear.

Taught by: Priscilla Kibbee

Supplies Needed:

Basics:
  • 10yds inexpensive muslin
  • 5 yds True-Grid Graph Material – this is available in the interfacing section of most fabric stores. It is a lightweight non-woven "fabric" printed with 1" square blue lines for pattern making. If you can’t find it I will have some available for purchase in class.
  • Sewing machine
  • Basic sewing supplies, pins, measuring tape, sewing machine needles, etc.
  • Paper and fabric scissors
  • Sewing thread—to match fabrics and neutral for muslins
  • Pad and pencils
  • Marking pen for fabric
  • Rotary mat, cutter, ruler
Fabric:
  • Two – 1 1/2 yd lengths of "beautiful" cotton prints you bought to make jackets or quilts with and hated to cut into the pattern (the coat will be reversible) If your hips measure more than 42" you need to either double these amounts or bring at least 2 yds of each.
  • 1 yd plain or "reads plain" cotton to blend with the above.
  • Silky fabrics. As many two or more yd pieces as you like (they don’t take up much room) to work with. It should be fabric with a drape. Wool also works well if it has a nice drape.
  • 1 yd medium wt. iron on interfacing
  • Can’t decide what to bring? Except for the silky or wool fabrics the vendors will, as usual, have many tempting fabrics for you to choose from. You may choose to just make several patterns (muslins) which you will be sure will fit you and make them up later. You can easily finish one jacket in class and possibly two or three.
