FIBER ART WORKSHOPS 2012

Schweinfurth Art Center, Auburn, NY

Class Descriptions
Innovative Dyeing Techniques                      April 24-28

Judy Robertson  Beginner to Advanced

Come and spend five colorful days creating gorgeous fabric.  This dyeing class will introduce you to Judy’s method of producing her textures.  With her techniques you will dye beautiful, very useable, multicolored pieces with different values and hues.  At least six different cotton fabrics will be available to try.  You will learn that the fabric base is as important as the dyeing in achieving certain textures.  Intensity in color, creating your own dyeing palette and textural surface design will be explored in depth.  A low water method is used in the dyeing process.  Studio safety will be taught and used in the class.  This is an all level class.  For returning students previous processes and techniques will be expounded, in addition to new techniques presented.

Shibori Fabrics for Quiltmaking             September 4-8

Jan Myers Newbury   All Levels

The basics of patternmaking by means of binding, clamping, stitching and pole-wrapping will be covered quickly.  We will then combine multiple layers of pattern and coloration to acheive fabrics that exhibit an amazing depth and luminosity.  As our knowledge of technique progresses we will explore quilt compositions with these fabrics - relationships that will guide further dyeing.  There will be discussion of quilting options, but no time spent on actual quilting.  Emphasis will be on the compositional potential of shibori patterned fabrics, ranging from the organic to the architectural; work will be with cellulose fibers and procion dyes.  Please note that there will be NO silk dyeing in this workshop.

Artfelts                                            September 29 & 30

Robin Blakney Carlson All Levels

This two day workshop is designed around the creation of a small scale felt work, with a highly textured and embellished surface.  I encourage students to work intuitively, without pressure.  You will be surprised by what evolves! On day one, we will wet felt our piece; combining a range of plant and animal fibers: fabrics, silks, yarns and wool, using resist and collage techniques.  Day two will focus on developing the surface through the addition of hand or machine stitching, beads and embellishing techniques.  We will explore each piece as a group, and discuss possibilities for strengthening the design, then begin the relaxing work of stitching. This workshop is for all levels of experience; intended to be a stress free way to explore texture, color and surface design on an intimate scale.  Finished pieces can be mounted as a wall piece or used as decorative art, akin to the art quilt.  Mounting techniques will be discussed.

Jazzknitting                                    September 29 & 30

Ilisha Helfman Beginner - Intermediate

In this workshop we will follow the placement of color on our skeins to form the shapes of our knitting. We will see how the same skein can produce completely different shapes when different colors are featured. We will also embrace qualities natural to knitting (striping, pooling, and curling) to make beautiful natural forms. There will also be a variety of loose knitted pieces to study for inspiration. Unlike free-form knitting, this is a considered and structured approach, though a liberating one as there are no patterns to follow, no gages or stitches to count and no mistakes to make or correct (hence, "knitting with no worries!"). Students have found it both fun and addictive as they follow their threads to find their own paths.

Over and Under, and Back Again             October 6 & 7

Karen Henderson   Beginner

Somewhere in all of our ancestry, there was a weaver.  In this introductory class, students will learn the basics of weaving through simple, fun exercises.  Using paper first, and then moving on to yarns using small hand looms and a shared pre-warped floor loom, participants will create woven surfaces.  By exploring different techniques, and playing with varying materials and colors, students will a create a body of samples that can stand alone for inspiration or reference, or they can become starting points for new projects.  Students will be encouraged to experiment and manipulate surfaces by subtracting threads or embellishing their woven samples and other pre-woven / purchased fabrics to reveal & create different surfaces altogether.

Adventures in Wicker Basketry                October 6 & 7

Flo Hoppe

Students will make two small baskets: one that explores color patterning, the other textural techniques. The color patterning will be woven using 3-rod wale and making spiral patterns, giant arrows, and a bargello pattern which all depend on particular numbers of spokes and weaving both left and right. The textural techniques include ridge weave, braid weave, two surface decorations techniques, and a border that encases a flat oval reed.

Line as Language

October 26 & 27

Terry Jarrard Dimond Beginner-Intermediate

In this workshop you will focus on the study and application of one of the basic elements of design – LINE. Dramatic or understated, frantic or languid, LINE can be the focus of a composition or a solid supporting player. You will learn how to incorporate and manipulate line to tell your story. You will compose and create a variety of machine – pieced studies working directly in fabric. Group and individual discussion will be an important part of this class.

Transformations: Using Disperse Dyes                            October 26 & 27

Carol Soderlund All Levels

Explore the world of transfer printing. Apply disperse dyes to paper with a multitude of printmaking processes, including spraying, stamping, screening and monoprinting, and then using an iron or heat press, transfer to a variety of cloth, including synthetic sheers, felt, lutradur, lame, poly satins and velvets, and drapery fabric. With the focus on experimentation and discovery, many small samples and studies will be made. In the two day class, we will begin small works with design exercises and applications in mixed media work will be explored.
