In this two-day workshop we will experiment with blending colors and creating movement from one color to another, just as a painter does with a brush and paints. Using one basic block and its variations, we'll also blend the focal fabric into the rest of the piecing.
As an option, you will also learn the basics of broderie perse applique to enhance the color blending.
General supplies:
- Rotary cutter
- ruler, pins
- cutting mat
- scissors
- seam ripper
- thread
- extra machine needles
- sewing machine in good working order
- 2 ½" and 4 ½" square acrylic rulers
If there are other supplies that you are comfortable using in class, please bring them as well.
Fabric
- 3/4 yard of a large print floral fabric which will be basis for the fabric selection for the rest of the pieced quilt. Choose a print that has multiple colors, at least four or five, and some motifs that are at least 3" in diameter.
- 3 yards total of assorted fabrics that coordinate with the colors in the focal fabric you've chosen. Select your fabrics so that they fall into four or five color groups.
Example: Your focal fabric may have five main colors. Select as many different fabrics from each of these colors as possible. This may mean you have 10-12 different red prints, 10-12 different purple prints, 10-12 different yellow prints etc. The more prints the better….just keep them within four to five different colors that are in your focal fabric. We will construct your blended quilt using this selection of fabrics. Remember…..the more different fabrics the better but some of your pieces can be small.
- 1 1/3 yards for backing
- ¾ yard for facing
- 48" x 56" piece of batting (we will use this as your design wall, so please bring it to class)
